What is a technical SEO audit, really?
A technical SEO audit checks whether search engines and AI crawlers can actually find, load, and understand every page on your site — separate from whether the writing itself is any good. Two sites can have identical content, and one ranks while the other never shows up, purely because of what's happening under the hood: a robots.txt file accidentally blocking a whole section, a broken canonical tag telling Google to index the wrong URL, pages that load so slowly visitors bounce before they ever read a word. Technical SEO is the plumbing. Content is what flows through it. A leak in the plumbing means great content never reaches anyone.
In practice, a real audit covers crawlability (can a bot even reach every page), indexability (is anything accidentally blocked from being indexed), site structure (are pages properly linked so nothing becomes an orphan), page speed, mobile-friendliness, structured data, and a long list of smaller signals — duplicate titles, missing alt text, broken internal links — that individually seem minor but compound across a whole site into a real, measurable drag on rankings.
Why does technical SEO matter if my content is already good?
Because good content that a search engine can't properly crawl or index might as well not exist. This is the single most common blind spot for site owners who write well but never check the technical layer: they assume that because a page reads well to a human, it must be working fine for Google too. A missing or duplicate canonical tag, a sitemap that silently stopped updating months ago, a redirect chain three hops long — none of these show up when you're proofreading your own copy, and all of them can quietly cap how well a page performs no matter how good the writing is.
